Dissipation and lightning strikes result inpersonal fatalities, equipment damage, and instantaneous current surges of some18,000 amps. Dissipation, the discharge or neutralization of opposite chargebuildup between ground and the atmosphere, occurs when this opposite chargebuildup becomes so large that it is accommodated as current flow through thesurrounding ambient, i.e. "lightning".
